Quick Overview:

Longwood Purple American wisteria is a well-known Longwood Gardens selection noted for its bushy growth and deep purple flowers. In late spring and early summer, the deciduous vine produces 5-inch-long pendulous clusters of fragrant flowers that attract butterflies. The lush foliage is bright green. This variety is also known for its ability to flower on younger plants. It prefers an acidic or neutral soil; too much nitrogen will cause the plant to produce more foliage and fewer or no flowers. As with other wisterias, this variety needs a support such as a fence or trellis.
