Quick Overview:

Magnolia soulangeana x liliflora ‘Genie’ is the result of 15 years of breeding resulting in a compact, small tree maturing at perhaps 10-13 feet tall. Sensational black-red buds open to small globular tulip-shaped blooms of deep rich maroon-purple on both surfaces. ‘Genie’ has lightly scented blooms from early spring to early summer, and mid to late summer where conditions are not too dry.  (Courtesy of Missouri Botanical Gardens Plant Finder)

Description

Best grown in organically rich, neutral to slightly acidic, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Appreciates a root-zone mulch to help retain soil moisture. Also appreciates a location protected from strong winds, but avoid warm southern exposures which may promote premature bud opening in spring. Fleshy root system is easily damaged during transplanting, so it is best to select a landscape location carefully and leave this magnolia undisturbed once planted.  (Courtesy of Missouri Botanical Gardens Plant Finder)
