Quick Overview:

‘JN16’ is a dark-leaved selection of redbud that features maroon colored foliage and lavender-pink blooms. This cultivar resulted from a controlled cross between Cercis canadensis ‘Ruby Falls’ and C. candadensis ‘JN2′ THE RISING SUN. Mature plants will reach up to 20′ tall with a 25’ wide canopy. The heart-shaped leaves will reach around 5.75″ long and 5.5″ wide and retain their dark, maroon color through the summer. The fall color is typically shades of chartreuse yellow. Commonly sold at nurseries and garden centers under the name BLACK PEARL.  (Courtesy of Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder)

Description

Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Part shade is best in hot summer climates. Performs best in moderately fertile soils with regular and consistent moisture. Avoid wet or poorly drained soils. Since this tree does not transplant well, it should be planted when young and left undisturbed.  (Courtesy of Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder)
