Quick Overview:

Perhaps one of the most aptly named maples, ‘Wild Fire’ is sure to light up the garden. It has small chartreuse green leaves which turn to bright golden yellows to orange in the fall. The real interest in this tree lies in its winter interest. The bark on ‘Wild Fire’ is noted for having two primary tones. Toward the base of the tree, the bark is bright golden yellow to golden orange. The golden yellows infuse into orange which infuse to colors of bright fiery red on the outer branches. The tree is a spectrum of color of yellows to reds. ‘Wild Fire’ is a brand new selection that is projected to reach 15 ft in 20 years. ‘Wild Fire’ was found by Jason Stevens of North Carolina.

Description

Easily grown in moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Grows well in sandy loams. May be grown in full sun in the northern parts of its growing range, but prefers at least some afternoon shade in the southern parts (including Durham) of its growing range. New foliage may scorch in full sun locations in hot summer areas, particularly if soils are not kept consistently moist. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Site in locations protected from strong winds. Avoid hot and dry sites. Fertilize in spring before leaves emerge. Pruning is best kept to a minimum, but if needed should be done in late fall to mid winter. Spring or summer pruning often results in significant bleeding.  (Courtesy of the Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder)
