Fall is for Planting
Those of us in the nursery industry have long been working to let our customers in on a secret: the fall is a great time for planting! While it’s easy to get the planting bug in spring when everything is showing signs of growth after winter’s dromancy, we often forget the fall is just as good of a time to add some plants to your landscape. Even though growth is slowing and the plants are going dormant, the roots continue to grow and become established underground. In fact, the plant can devote more energy to root growth because it’s not simultaneously trying to keep foliage alive and growing. Cooler temperatures and more rainfall also decrease stress on newly installed plants.
Our perennial sale is a great way to add some season long color to your garden. It’s a good idea to plant perennials at least a month before cold weather settles in so the root system has time to become established. Trees and shrubs can be planted any time through Thanksgiving, even up to Christmas if the weather cooperates.
