Sequoia sempervirens ‘Inman’s Select’

If you’ve ever seen the giant redwood trees in California and always thought you might want to grow one in your own landscape, meet ‘Inman’s Select’, a select variety propagated from an established specimen in Inman, South Carolina. Redwoods, scientifically known as Sequoia sempervirens, are exceedingly rare outside of their normal habitat on the west coast, but this one in South Carolina has thrived there since around 1950 reaching a height of around 100 feet with a width of about 20 feet and a trunk circumference of about 12 feet. Redwood trees are fast growing when young, adding 3 to 5 feet in height per year, but growth does slow down with age. Very easy to grow, it features very soft and feathery fern-like evergreen foliage that emerges light green in spring maturing to deeper green in summer. Fissured bark is a very attractive reddish orange, which contrasts beautifully with the green leaves. A truly spectacular tree that deserves a spot in any landscape with enough space. We suggest planting at least 30 feet away from the home or septic lines.
