Found as a chance seedling in the field in Tennessee, ‘Crimson Red’ is a red-blooming dogwood variety unlike any other red-flowering variety on the market. ‘Crimson Red’ cultivar is red to the very core, with red-tinted new growth and striking, dark crimson flowers in the early spring months. In addition, ‘Crimson Red’ has proven more vigorous than ‘Cherokee Brave’ and ‘Cherokee Chief’ in its growth habit, growing to a consistent mature height much faster than other common varieties.
Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, organically rich, acidic soils in part shade. Benefits from a 2-4″ mulch which will help keep roots cool and moist in summer. CHEROKEE BRAVE reportedly has better drought resistance than most flowering dogwood cultivars available in commerce.
