Tricyrtis formosana ‘Samurai’

Toad lilies are valued garden plants because of their unique flowers, ability to flower in shade and late summer to fall bloom time. ‘Samurai’ is perhaps best know for its golden-edged foliage and compact form. It is a vigorous, rhizomatous plant which only grows 12-18″ tall (about 1/2 the size of the species). Features small, purple, lily-like flowers (1 inch long) with dark purple spotting and yellow throats. Each flower has six showy tepals (similar appearing sepals and petals). Flowers are arranged in branched clusters (cymes) primarily at the stem ends but also in the upper leaf axils. Broadly lance-shaped, shiny dark green leaves (to 4″ long) have creamy golden edges, parallel veins, hairy undersides and clasping leaf bases.  (Courtesy of Missouri Botanical Gardens Plant Finder)
