Origanum is a family of herbs (and a member of the mint family) that includes a large variety of cultivars, most of which can be used for cooking, and many of which are highly ornamental. Italian Oregano is a lovely, if less showy, version which is native to the Mediterranean. This low-growing plant also makes an attractive ground cover.
Italian Oregano is easy to grow in well-drained soil, forming an attractive, clumping mound of trailing branches with rounded, aromatic light-green leaves about 1in long. In early summer, it’s topped with spikes of tiny white flowers. To encourage the bushy growth habit, pinch it back before flowering begins.
